It is a question I get a lot on the doorstep, and it is a fair one! Most of us do not think about the school board trustee role until something happens at our child's school that makes us sit up and pay attention, but it's an incredibly important job.
School board trustees are elected within the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board's "Zones" to govern, advocate, and hold the board accountable.
In practice, trustees are responsible for:
- Setting the school board's strategic priorities and policies
- Approving the budget and advocating for adequate provincial funding
- Hiring and holding the Director of Education accountable
- Making major board-level decisions about schools, programs, boundaries, and resources
- Representing their communities and bringing students', families', and educators' concerns to the school board
- Ensuring the board is meeting its responsibilities around student achievement, equity, safety, and well-being
It's important to be engaged in electing your school board trustee in municipal elections, because it is your opportunity to ensure that someone who represents your values is advocating in the interests of your children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and neighbours at the board table. Even if you do not have children in school, it is important to be engaged and vote -- we live in a society, and the children being educated today may be your future nurse, mechanic, plumber, or prime minister!
In Ottawa, there are four school boards. I am running for the trustee position in Zone 10 of the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board (English-Public). Zone 10 loosely covers Somerset Ward in Centretown, and if you are in my zone, I hope to earn your vote!
